“Recreation: Windy Gap Cabin offers visitors winter recreation, rustic lodging, scenery and wildlife viewing. It is the most remote cabin in the White Mountains National Recreation Area's cabin and trail system. This is a primitive cabin with no running water or electricity, and no cell coverage. It can accommodate up to four people comfortably. This is primarily a winter use cabin where snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular activities. The surrounding 1-million-acre White Mountains National Recreation Area offers more than 250 miles of groomed winter trails linking 12 public-use cabins. This remote cabin is very difficult to reach on foot in the summer due to boggy terrain. It is not accessible to all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in the summer (May 1 - October 14). Directions: From Fairbanks, Alaska, take the Steese Highway north to Fox, Alaska, and then the Elliott Highway north to the Wickersham Dome Trailhead at milepost 28. From here the Wickersham Creek and Fossil Creek trails (38 miles) lead to the cabin. Alternatively, take the Elliott Highway to the Colorado Creek Trailhead at milepost 57, and then follow the Colorado Creek and Windy Creek trails (30 miles) to the cabin. The Cache Mountain Loop Trail (22 miles) connects this cabin with the Cache Mountain Cabin. N65 34' 42.162" negative W147 25' 30.217"”
