“Recreation: Richard's Cabin offers visitors winter recreation opportunities, rustic lodging, scenery and wildlife viewing. This is a primitive cabin with no running water or electricity. This is primarily a winter use cabin where snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are popular activities. The surrounding 1-million-acre White Mountains National Recreation Area offers more than 250 miles of groomed winter trails linking 12 public-use cabins. The trail is very muddy in the summer and access is extremely difficult. Directions: The most direct route from the city of Fairbanks, Alaska, is to travel north on the Steese Highway, which offers two access points for the cabin. One route, recommended only in winter, is via the McKay Creek Trailhead at milepost 42. Travel North on McKay Creek Trail for approximately 14 miles to its junction with the Nome Creek Road, then follow the Bear Creek Trail for about 6.5 miles to Richard's Cabin. Alternatively, take the Steese Highway to U.S Creek Road at milepost 57. Follow the U.S Creek Road (not plowed in winter) for about 7 miles to the Nome Creek Road. Follow the Nome Creek Road west towards the Ophir Creek Campground for about 11 miles to its junction with the Bear Creek Trail. Take the Bear Creek Trail for about 6.5 miles to Richard's Cabin.
