Refuge staff are not always present, but it has become a popular destination for guided bear viewers on day trips, as well as self-guided ones operating from the public use cabin. Outhouse bathroom facilities are available near the viewing pad. Accessing Upper Dog Salmon River: it is advisable to have a small inflatable raft or kayaks to access the lake outlet from the cabin. The alternative requires a 2 mile off-trail walk around the lake's shore and wading across Dog Salmon Creek in order to access the walking trail at the outlet.”
